The Assurance Partner of Deloitte Ghana, Dr. Kwabena Situ and nine others have been appointed as members of the National Sustainability Reporting Implementation Committee.
The members from various sectors of the economy include the Bank of Ghana, National Insurance Commission, Ghana Stock Exchange, National Pensions Regulatory Authority, State Interest and Governance Authority, Chamber of Mines, Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the professional services firms.
The committee is to ensure that businesses in Ghana effectively adopt and implement Sustainability Standards, promote the benefits and importance of adopting IFRS S1 and S2 standards among stakeholders and the public and monitor the progress of implementation within their respective sectors, providing feedback to the Institute of Chartered Accountant Ghana (ICAG) Sustainability Adoption Standing Committee.
Giving his remarks after being sworn into office, Chairman of the Committee, Andrew Akoto – Partner at KPMG, said the committee will develop and execute a comprehensive implementation strategy as well as coordinate efforts among various stakeholders involved in the implementation process.
He assured that the committee will monitor and evaluate the progress of implementation and “last but not the least, serve as ambassadors for implementation of the sustainability reporting standards”.
“I’m very happy for this platform to engage with not only accountants – because, yes, the implementation reporting committee is being incubated by the ICAG – but we expect to go beyond the ICAG and involve other, broader stakeholder consultations as well as participants for us to be successful with this mandate,” he explained.
“Even as we dialogue at this opportune time, we are minded that currently one of the challenges engaging the national media conversation is about threats of demonstrations for strikes, for civil unrest because of the existential threats of ‘Galamsey’ within our economy.
“And as we note, there should be economic growth but balanced with environmental stewardship; and for that matter we must be bold to engage with very key persons, especially the politicians – because if we are to say it as it is, we are where we are because there has not been a frontal and direct manifesto to deal with this ‘Galamsey’ menace.
The National Sustainability Reporting Implementation Committee’s primary objectives are: serving as ambassadors for implementation of the sustainability reporting standards; ensuring that respective institutions, members or clients adopt and comply with the sustainability reporting standards; and providing guidelines and support to the Institute of Chartered Accountant Ghana (ICAG) in the development and implementation of the standards’ roadmap.
