NADeF to implement cross-community projects to boost youth employment opportunities

The Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), corporate social responsibility arm of Newmont Ahafo Mines is set to roll-out ‘cross-community’ projects aimed at fostering collaborative development initiatives that will unite the ten host communities to create wealth.

The new NADeF development journey promises to transform the landscape of community engagement within its operational area. The transformative vision is in line with the commitment of the Foundation to empowering the youth to explore innovative economic activities in areas such as the agribusiness space to create pathways for young entrepreneurs in adjoining communities, to generate real jobs and nurture sustainable income sources that will stimulate local economies.

Prof. Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, Chairperson of Board of Trustees-NADeF, emphasized that the new strategic pivot marks a shift from the traditional economic empowerment project implementation model that has characterized NADeF’s efforts over the past 16 years.



“With an emphasis on cooperation and shared growth, the Foundation is poised to redefine the principles of community development, ensuring that no community is left behind on the path to sustainable prosperity,” he said.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of an inspection tour by the Board of Trustees to five communities within the catchment area of Newmont Ahafo South Mine in the Ahafo Region.

During the inspection tour, the Board of Trustees evaluated 15 different projects across five host communities: Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso. These projects span various sectors, including education, health, and social amenities, and are at different stages of completion. Key among the projects was a nearly completed four-storey lecture block at Kenyasi No. 2. The facility, now 95% complete, represents a significant investment in the future of education in the Ahafo Region and is designated to serve as a campus for the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani.
At the Gyedu Technical Institute, a brand-new three-storey classroom block was taking shape. The project, which kicked off in May 2024, will feature 18 state-of-the-art classrooms designed to foster an enriching learning environment for students, and it is expected to be completed by February 2025.

They also conducted a thorough inspection of a health center at Gyedu, which is undergoing a significant upgrade to become a fully operational polyclinic. This modern facility will soon be ready to serve the community, offering an extensive range of medical services. From specialized care to advanced diagnostics and comprehensive treatment options.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi underscored the crucial role of Sustainable Development Committees (SDCs) in overseeing these projects, saying “their active involvement ensures that contractors deliver quality work, thereby maximizing the impact of NADeF’s investments and guaranteeing accountability.”
