In a significant move towards empowering young women farmers under the Harnessing Agricultural Production and Productivity for Youth (HAPPY) programme, Newage Agric Solutions Ltd trained its first batch of Spray Service Providers (SSPs) to assist young women farmers by rendering spraying services to them.

The training, which took place at Asutuare, is the first to train over 100 youth to provide spray services to farmers across the various operational areas under the project.

This training aims at equipping the young people with skills and techniques on how to effectively and safely use agrochemicals in crop production. Furthermore, it provides a valuable opportunity for the youth to generate income creating, dignified and fulfilling jobs for themselves.

As part of the training package, participants received starter kits which included knapsack sprayers, protective overalls, gloves, boots, goggles and a spray service manual. The intensive session covered crucial topics such as proper spraying techniques, understanding crop protection products, reading toxicology bands, interpreting pesticide labels, pesticide formulation and safe and responsible use among others.

“We are committed to empowering the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs,” said Martin Nartey, General Manager. “This training not only provides them with the skills needed for successful spraying services, but also helps them start their businesses, making farming easier and more convenient for our female farmers.”

The participants expressed their joy and gratitude for the training. “This has been an incredibly impactful and resourceful experience,” said Johnson Worlanyo Hodey, one of the participants. “I’ve never received any kind of training like this for spraying services and the starter kit is such a great initiative. It will make starting my business so much easier. It’s also the first time I’ve ever received a complete set of PPEs and a knapsack for a business, which is truly remarkable.”

By equipping young farmers with the tools and knowledge they need, Newage is fostering a sustainable and prosperous agricultural future. The company’s efforts highlight its dedication to supporting youth and promoting sustainable farming practices, while easing the workload for women farmers in the various farming communities.

The HAPPY Programme is a four-year partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and Agri-Impact Limited, supported by an eight-member consortium that includes Newage Agric Solutions Ltd.
