Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the religious tolerance in the country as the pivot around which peace revolves.

“At the heart of Ghana’s peace is religious tolerance. I mean interfaith coexistence and tolerance” he said.

He noted that Ghana, has become a role model for religious tolerance and called for continuous co-existence between Muslim and Christian communities in the country.

The Vice President was addressing the congregation of the St. Paul Pro Cathedral, of the Catholic Church at Sekondi ahead of the Manifesto launch in Takoradi.

The visit to the Church, also coincided with the commissioning of a special place where the crucifix of Jesus has been placed in the auditorium and was funded by a former National Chairman of the NPP, Peter Mac-Manu, a member of the Catholic Church.

It was also revealed that the children of the former NPP chairman renovated all the glass windows of the church and made them ultramodern.

Dr Bawumia added that the universal desire for peace transcends religious differences and stressed that peace is fundamental to human existence.

He pointed out that “when I visited the Vatican recently and met Pope Francis, he made it clear that the world admires Ghana’s religious tolerance”

He said the Pope, commended the harmonious relationship between Muslims and Christians and called for continuous love between these two dominated religions in the country.

Dr. Bawumia told the congregation that “Muslims do not joke at all with the Catholic’s Virgin Mary and that in the Quran, the only female who is mentioned is Virgin Mary”.

Peter Mac-Manu was happy to note that he was able to bring former President Kufuor and the sitting President, Nana Akufo -Addo to the Catholic sometime ago adding “And now the Vice President and the next President of Ghana is in our church”.

“This shows that there is something good in our church”, he said.

The Parish Priest of St Paul Pro Cathedral of the Catholic Church, Sekondi, Most Rev Fr Michael Blay Morkeh indicated that Dr Bawumia’s selection as the NPP’s flagbearer is divinely ordained.

Therefore, he prayed God would fulfil the heart desires of the Vice President come December 7, 2024.
