Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Cup unearths young talents

The Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championship Cup has successfully identified and nurtured young taekwondo talents for the nation.

The tournament, organised by the Korean Embassy in collaboration with the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, aimed to promote the sport and provide a platform for Ghanaian youths to showcase their skills.

This initiative is part of the Korean Government’s efforts to strengthen cultural exchange and cooperation between Korea and Ghana.



Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Park Kyongsig, noted the growing popularity of Taekwondo in Ghana, citing its benefits for physical strength, development and relationship-building.

He promised to support Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 Youth Olympics and expressed anticipation for the next edition of the Korean Ambassador’s Championship.

The inter-regional championships featured young athletes aged 13 to 17 competing in Kyorugi and Poomsae. The competitions included five weight categories for each gender in junior and cadet Kyorugi, with athletes vying for medals, bragging rights, selection and the overall best accolade.

The competition, which is the 14th edition, was held at the Ga Mashie Hall of the Trust Sports Emporium, with participants from various regions across the country demonstrating their prowess in the martial art.

The Greater Accra Region showcased exceptional talent to retain the title that they had won in the previous edition.

Under the leadership of Coach Fayise Selorm, the Greater Accra Region came through with 185 points, securing their victory with nine gold, eight silver and 12 bronze medals.

The Volta Region came in second with 72 points, followed by the Ashanti Region in third with 68 points. The Upper East Region placed fourth with 52 points, while the Northern Region finished fifth with 48 points. Other participating regions included Eastern, Bono, Upper West, Western and Central.

President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Lartey Otu, highlighted the championship’s role in preparing young athletes for the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal. He congratulated all participants and winners, encouraging them to continue training to achieve their dreams.

“We have seen improvement in performances from the athletes as compared to that of the last edition. Let’s come together to form a strong Taekwondo fraternity,” Mr. Otu urged the regions.

The Ghana Para Taekwondo Federation presented him with a citation for his contributions to the development of the sport.

The Best Male Junior Player and Best Female went to James Sedoh and Zitta Tornyevah respectively. Jayden Nettey received the Best Male Junior Poomsae Award, and Setorme Tornyeva was named the Best Female Junior. Other winners received hampers, medals and certificates.
