Local PMI chapter holds 6th annual conference and awards

Project Management Institute Ghana (PMI) Chapter has held its Annual National Project Management Conference and Project Management Excellence Awards at the Rock City Hotel in Kwahu- Nkwatia in the Eastern Region.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Sustainable Project Management Futures: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive World’. The annual 2-in-1 event is widely regarded as one of the top gatherings for professionals in the industry, with a focus on advancing sustainable practices in project management.

The conference, which happens to be the 6th of its kind, brought together a diverse array of experts, practitioners, and thought leaders to engage in discussions about innovative strategies and to share insights on sustainable project management.



It delved into key areas such as Innovative Strategies, Adaptive Leadership, Technology Integration, Sustainability in Project Management, Remote Project Management, Agile Development, Data-Driven Decision-Making, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as Generative AI.

Speaking at the conference on Thursday, July 25, 2024, Frank Owusu-Asamoah, the President of PMI Ghana Chapter, made known that the Ghanaian chapter of the non-profit organization is committed to supporting its stakeholders, including the government, by offering advisory services to facilitate the successful implementation of government projects.

Mr. Owusu-Asamoah further asserted that the government loses a significant amount of money from public projects, which could have been allocated to other initiatives. He detailed that globally, for every US$1billion invested in a project, US$101 million is wasted, funds that could have been utilized for other projects.

The PMI Ghana Chapter President emphasized that this is the reason his firm is prepared to collaborate with government agencies and the government as a whole in finding solutions for such issues. He also urged various industry players to join the PMI for innovative strategies and an exciting experience. Mr. Owusu-Asamoah also disclosed that PMI Ghana Chapter is now a fully registered organization, which is recognized under the law.

“We are here with over 240 delegates from all industries including industry leaders as our speakers and we are having a lot of top provoking presentations for our members and online audience as well. As a chapter, we have seen the need to engage our stakeholders including the government of Ghana, because we have a lot to offer, by providing advisory services to the government so that government projects will be run better.

“And that is why we are here discussing this, and when we leave here, we are poised to engaging government agencies on the smaller scale and the government on a larger scale to see how we can develop solutions to some of these issues,” he said.

Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa (PMI), George Asamani also emphasized the organization’s dedication to ensuring that government and industry projects are carried out properly. He mentioned that he makes it a point to attend the Annual event every year due to the significant impact it has on the country.

Addressing a section of the media, Jumoke Lafenwa, the immediate past president of PMI Ghana averred that the organization’s primary goal is to enhance project management practices and provide value to stakeholders in Ghana. She also expressed optimism about the prospect of having skilled project managers in various industries and government entities within the next five years, ensuring the successful execution of projects.
