Prampram Homowo sets August 31 as grand durbar

As part of preparations for this year’s Homowo in Prampram, the traditional council has settled on August 31 for a grand durbar, to be attended by chiefs, politicians and foreign diplomats.

Nene Tetteh Afutu III, Chief of Afienya, disclosed to PramCitiTV’s Alvin Nii Okai Kasabrofo (DJ Soul) in an interview that the elders have agreed to go ahead with the programme after the settlement of disputes that previously made it difficult for it to happen.

Nene Afutu III was speaking on the back of the official launch of activities to mark this year’s Homowo festival.

He also appealed to indigenes from the traditional area to be involved in the celebration.  “Our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters living abroad must therefore come home to celebrate this important day, which will be one of many durbars to come,” he told the Prampram based YouTube channel.

The last time a durbar was organised as part of the Homowo activities was in 1995.  Post that year, factionalism had stalled efforts at organising one until the impending one.

On his part, Nene Tetteh Wakah III, the Paramount Chief of Prampram, and President of the Prampram Traditional Council, acknowledged the elders for their role in helping bring an end to the disputes, which has led to the impending durbar.  He reiterated his commitment to the peace of the area and implored the youth to support the elders in these efforts.

According to him, no town or community thrives in chaos. He said the economic prospects are good for the town but unresolved disputes continue to drive away investors. He was, however, confident that a new path is being created by the elders; and therefore, appealed to everyone to support it.

Among the activities on the programme for the festival, there will be a clean-up exercise as well as the annual Nene Tetteh Wakah III health walk and screening exercise. The theme for this year’s Homowo is ‘Celebrating Culture to Promote Perpetual Unity and Development’.

Chief Executive of the Ningo Prampram District, Al-latiff Tetteh Amanor, on his part, said the assembly will continue to collaborate with the traditional council to continue works on some development initiatives that are ongoing in the district. On this year’s elections, he appealed to the public to keep the peace.

According to him, divergent political opinion is not a crime; therefore, encouraged the public to eschew violence. “If I am to look for somebody from the family house today, I don’t go there asking of the person’s political affiliation – it does not matter to anyone,” he stressed.

He added that the security agencies are on the alert to deal with anyone who misconducts himself during and after the elections.
