Founder of AJ’s Smiling Heart Foundation and victim of a gas explosion, Maame Abena Agyeiwaa Agyei, has donated items and GH¢2,000 cash to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

Over the past 12 years, Agyeiwaa has consistently shown this kind gesture to the centre, a decision she made after recuperating from burns. Friends of Ms. Agyei, led by Josephine Ekua Asmah, donated the items, including toiletries, provisions, water and fruits on her behalf. Additionally, they supported five patients, including two children and three adults in critical condition with GH¢2,000 cash.

Presenting the items to patients, Ms. Asthma shared the motive behind their initiative and encouraged them to remain hopeful, assuring them that they would recover and be discharged.

The Senior Nursing Officer, Ruth Ofosu Offei, praised the foundation’s initiative, saying: “We are pleased and grateful for the support from our dear sister who suffered burns 12 years ago and always remembers to contribute to us.”

Ms. Asthma highlighted the huge cost incurred in treating burns and their impact on one’s appearance, advising everyone, especially mothers, to be cautious and attentive when cooking or engaging in other house chores involving fire or hot objects. “Treating burns remains a serious issue because it is costly and affects one’s physical appearance. Therefore, people must be cautious when cooking,” she advised.

Furthermore, she called upon individuals, foundations, associations and philanthropists to assist patients at the centre.
