This July, staff from Standard Chartered took part in the Financial Literacy and Mentoring Session at the “Empower Her Camp” where they mentored young girls and provided crucial knowledge on budgeting, saving, and investing.
The session formed part of the Standard Chartered Employee Volunteering program, where all employees are provided with three days of paid volunteering leave annually to participate in skills-based volunteering. They deliver community programmes, such as teaching financial education and mentoring young people.
The Empower Her Camp, an initiative of the Akua Kuenyehia Foundation, is a week-long boot camp designed to provide underprivileged young girls with essential skills and knowledge and thereby inspire and prepare them for tertiary education and future careers. This annual event, structured around the foundation’s 4Cs—Career, Culture, Community, and Core skills—aims to empower and inspire the next generation of female leaders.
This year, the camp focused on entrepreneurship and robotics, offering in-depth career guidance, cultural understanding and diversity, community engagement, and core skills development.
The impact of the volunteers went beyond technical skills. They served as mentors, sharing life lessons and career advice, and encouraging the girls to pursue their dreams despite any obstacles they might face.
The cultural understanding and diversity discussions broadened the girls’ perspectives, helping them appreciate and navigate different cultural contexts.
Through the Empower Her Camp, Standard Chartered’s employees demonstrated that skill-sharing and community engagement are powerful tools for empowerment. By investing in these young girls, they are not only shaping individual futures but also contributing to the broader development of the community.
Standard Chartered Bank remains committed to its vision driving social impact in Ghana through Futuremakers, its global youth economic empowerment initiative.
