Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana has announced plans to import 100 electric buses by the end of the year.
This forward-thinking initiative is aimed at not only reducing carbon emissions and transportation costs but also at providing hope in the fight against climate change.
Dr. Bawumia revealed this initiative during a meeting with members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), underlining the crucial role of local stakeholders in this public-private partnership to procure the electric buses.
He outlined the government’s strategy, which includes constructing charging stations at fueling stations across the country to support the new fleet of buses upon their arrival.
“Electric vehicles offer environmental benefits and stability in fuel prices,” Dr. Bawumia explained.
“We are starting the construction of charging stations this month, utilizing hybrid solar-electricity technology to power these stations. By the end of this year, we aim to demonstrate the feasibility of electric buses by introducing close to 100 units,” he added.
The initiative underscores Ghana’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and renewable energy integration in the transport sector.
