In the rapidly advancing digital age, taking care of one’s eyes has never been more important. Mr. Ashish Gokaldas, CEO of Gokals Ani Limited, welcomed students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to explore his family’s business history.

He detailed the transformation from a brokerage firm in the 1970s into a successful manufacturing enterprise with a retail shop. This journey, marked by obstacles like limited demand, insufficient support, and funding issues, vividly illustrates the family’s resilience and innovative spirit.

From brokerage beginnings to manufacturing milestones

Mr. Ashish details how their great-grandfather started the business in the 1970s by selling raw materials and later transitioned into brokerage. The family eventually ventured into manufacturing, establishing a retail shop to cater directly to consumers.

In 2017, after completing his education in accounting and finance, he returned to the family business with renewed vigor. However, the road ahead was anything but smooth. They encountered additional difficulties in launching a cosmetic distribution business, underscoring the persistent challenges in the entrepreneurial landscape.

Lens manufacturing and technological advancements

Shifting the focus to their core business, Mr. Ashish highlighted the latest developments in eyewear technology, emphasizing the importance of accurate information for optimal lens production. Their company’s manufacturing process involves meticulous cutting, polishing, and quality checks, ensuring high-quality lenses tailored to individual needs.

One of the key innovations discussed was the advent of freeform lenses. Unlike conventional lenses, freeform technology offers numerous benefits, including improved field of vision, reduced keyhole effect, and smoother peripheral vision. He underscored how these advancements lead to faster adaptation and enhanced visual comfort for wearers.

Customized eyewear solutions and market adaptation

The conversation then explored the significance of customization in eyewear solutions. He explained how freeform lenses are designed to meet specific vision requirements, providing a more personalized experience. This technological leap allows for a broader range of vision correction and smoother transitions across different focal points.

Moreover, Mr. Ashish emphasized the importance of gathering accurate patient information for customized lens prescriptions. Active listening and thorough patient consultations are crucial in ensuring that the lenses manufactured meet the precise needs of each individual.

Challenges and passion in the optometry industry

Mr. Ashish shared his passion for the optometry industry, highlighting the need for a personalized approach to addressing the challenges faced by single-vision users. He discussed the importance of sales and finance knowledge in the pharmaceutical industry, stressing the value of a well-rounded skill set.

Mr. Ashish also addressed the scarcity of lens design experts in the optometry space. His vision includes establishing three setup labs dedicated to advancing lens design and manufacturing, aiming to bridge the gap in expertise and improve overall industry standards.

A vision for the future

Despite the numerous challenges, Mr. Ashish remains optimistic about the future. They acknowledge the potential pitfalls of greed in the next generation but believe in the power of innovation and dedicated effort. The discussion concludes on a hopeful note, with the company expressing its commitment to advancing the eyewear industry through technology and personalized care.
