Serene Insurance, UGMC observe International Day for Nurses and Midwives

Serene Insurance, a member of the First Sky Group and a leading general insurance company, has partnered the University of Ghana University Medical Centre (UGMC) to observe activities marking this year’s International Day of the Nurse and Midwife.

The International Day of the Midwife, which fell on Friday May 5, 2024 and International Nurses Day which was observed on Friday, May 12, 2024 recognise the incredible contribution that nurses and midwives make to our communities and nations and the significant impact that their work has on the healthcare sector.

Observed every year to honour nursing and midwifery practitioners and students globally and nationally, the UGMC Chapter of the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association, as part of their celebrations, partnered Serene Insurance to hold a health screening exercise in line with its Health Screening for Institutions in recognition of the Day for Nurses and Midwives.



The International Day for Nurses was on the theme ‘Our Nurses, Our Future – The Economic Power of Care’ and that of Midwives was on the theme ‘Midwives: A Vital Climate Solution’.

More than a hundred staff of Serene Insurance participated in the exercise to undergo comprehensive review of their health status and receive professional advice on steps to address any medical concerns observed by the team of doctors, nurses and support staff from the UGMC.

Sharing her thoughts on the celebration, Chief Executive Officer of Serene Insurance, Mrs. Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong, commended nurses, midwives, midwifery and nursing students across the country for the central role they play in the delivery of quality healthcare in our health regime.

She observed the work nurses and midwives do go a long way to make significant transformations in the lives of patients, especially mothers and children, applauding retired nursing and midwifery practitioners, including those who paved the way for the practice to become so revered in the country.

Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Mrs. Judith Asiamah, reiterated the inimitable role practitioners play in an enormously demanding atmosphere on the back of complex gravities of work pressures which can get in the way of their capacity to deliver unsurpassed medical attention conceivable for every woman, baby and family.

“In these profound moments of mounting calls for better quality of healthcare services, we pledge that as practitioners and professionals, our high ethical values and standards will continue to be our blazing light assuring our mothers and all women folk that we remain committed to delivering the finest, most person-focused attention imaginable throughout pregnancy, birth and post-delivery,” Mrs. Asiamah guaranteed.

The UGMC Chapter has outlined a number of activities, including the health screening held on May 17, 2024; a public lecture and panel discussion for nurses and midwives to be organised on May 28, 2024; an official launch slated for May 29, 2024; and a Dinner and Awards Night expected to come off on May 31, 2024.

Chief Executive Officer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Dr. Anim Boamah, declaring his full support for the celebration, urged all staff of the hospital to participate fully in the activities lined up to show solidarity to celebrate midwives and nurses and all their hard work and dedication to quality healthcare delivery.

Serene Insurance is well-capitalised with about GH¢59million and was the first insurance company in Ghana to officially announce full capitalisation in January 2021, far above the limit set for new capital requirements by the insurance regulator, the National Insurance Commission. It recorded about GH¢62million in gross written premiums for the 2022 financial year, representing 43.2 percent increase as against GH¢43.3million in 2021.
