Staff of the Wa Branch of GCB Bank PLC, led by Branch Manager Mr. Dennis Boateng-Bempah, have donated key items to the tune of GH¢8,000 in support of the Wa Central Prison.

The items donated include bags of sugar, rice, gallons of cooking oil, liquid soap, cement, soft drinks, toiletries, among other essential items.

This kind gesture, which was shown on May Day, was necessitated after the Branch Manager and his team visited the bastille a couple of months ago. “What we saw during our visit touched us and we felt the need to give our widows mite to support the inmates and encourage the officers to keep up the good work”, he said. Staff of the branch voluntarily contributed to support the cause.

The items were received by the Regional Commander, Mr. James Mwinyelle, on behalf of Ghana Prisons Service. He expressed his profound gratitude to the branch staff and management of GCB Bank for going the extra mile to offer a helping hand. “These items will go a long way to support and provide a sense of relief to the over 200 inmates. The cement bags will be used to reconstruct the broken-down wall to reaffirm the security at the prison,” he added.

The Wa Prison was set up in 1920 and was equipped to accommodate 15 inmates in the Upper East Region. Over the years, the correctional centre has seen some growth and expansion to house more inmates. The facility currently holds over 200 inmates.

GCB Bank is Ghana’s largest indigenous bank with over 184 branches nationwide. The bank has been active in the communities which it operates through several corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives over its 70 years of existence. Staff are also encouraged to complement the efforts of the corporate office to touch many lives to reflect the bank’s mantra – Your bank for life!
