The Tamale-West Church of Christ Youth Ministry has held its third Annual Relationship Seminar at the church’s auditorium at Lamashegu, Tamale, with a call on the youth to consider knowing the spouse well before proposing to him or her.
Knowing your spouse well before selection would help build and sustain the relationship since relationship is meant to know each other while marriage is for life.
This year’s seminar, organised by Love and Love Reflection – a licensed consultant in collaboration with the Tamale West church Youth Ministry under the theme ‘The Bible and Selection of a Spouse’, was aimed at providing some guidance to the bachelors and spinsters in the selection of their spouses according to God’s standards; and to guide married couples in handling their spouses in a godly way.
Speaking on the topic ‘Do we have divine guidance for choosing a spouse today?’, Evangelist George Dassah indicated that to know God’s guidance, one must be completely committed to his purpose, move out in obedience accompanied by common sense, and apply God’s wisdom.
According to him, as a Christian, you need to strongly stand firm as in the time of Abraham. They waited and sought divine guidance before choosing a spouse. He added that this divine guidance, however, is premised on doing God’s will.
He advise the youth not to be in a haste in selecting a spouse, but rather engage in friendship first to know each other well; and, then, check for genotypes and blood groups before engaging in any relationship to avoid any future heartbreaks.
Counsellor Grace Afia Larbi said having a spouse or being married is God’s plan or idea, saying: “God has a purpose for making it part of the creation story right from the beginning. Our understanding of the marriage institution should draw us closer to understanding the role the Bible plays in spousal selection. We need to seek the intervention of God and advice from the elderly in the family or society before selecting a spouse,” she said.
The Preacher of Tamale West Church of Christ, Evangelist Daniel Adjei Mensah, commended the conveners of the programme and thanked the participants for making the programme successful. He entreated everyone to make it a point to attend such programmes that offer godly counsel to make marriages right.
The Lead Convener of the seminar, Sammy Adjei, who is a Love & Relationship expert and a Licensed Counsellor, indicated that it is his passion to see that the world has meaningful marriages and functional families and as such, the seminar, which was started in 2022, serves as a platform of learning and idea-sharing with the expressed purpose of equipping singles and married couples for effective marriage and family life which in the long term.
“If marriages are meaningful, families will be functional and if families are functional, then we will have stable and sound societies which will make the world a worthy place of living,” he said. He appealed to extend the programme to the tertiary and other institutions in order to educate the youth on best relationship practices.
