As the UK’s Envoy for the UK-African Investment Summit (UK-AIS), my recent visit to Ghana has solidified our commitment to forging a stronger partnership between the United Kingdom and Ghana.
The UK-AIS, planned for spring 2024 in London and personally hosted by the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is not just an event; it is a catalyst for modern partnerships aimed at fostering jobs and growth. Our emphasis lies in building enduring collaborations that are mutually beneficial, respectful, and attuned to the unique needs and aspirations of African nations, including Ghana.
During my discussions with Ghanaian government and industry leaders, it became evident that both nations are eager to capitalize on the opportunities presented by summit. Despite several challenges in the global economy since 2020, we aim to surpass the achievements of the 2020 summit, which was attended by His Excellency President Nana Ado Danquah Akuffo Addo, by exploring deeper and more wide ranging investment partnerships.
The UK, recognized as the leading business investor in Africa by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) World Investment Report 2023, seeks to showcase its strengths as a global hub for finance, innovation, and green technologies. We are eager to highlight the role of the UK and the City of London in providing both public and private finance to support the economic capabilities of African nations in the future.
Our offer to Ghana encompasses a renewed commitment to strengthening our longstanding ties.
The UK-AIS is not just about attracting investments; it is about realizing concrete opportunities for mutual prosperity, growth, and job creation. By securing major investments, showcasing Ghana’s strengths and innovations, supporting policies for trade integration, and promoting women’s economic potential, we envision a comprehensive and inclusive partnership.
Ghana is a shining example of what can be achieved when countries work together to build a more prosperous future. The country’s “Beyond Aid” vision is aligned with the UK Government’s vision for Africa. We believe that Africa has the potential to be one of the world’s fastest-growing regions, and we are committed to supporting its development.
The UK-Ghana Business Council (UKGBC), an economic forum co-chaired by His Excellency The Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and UK Ministers, is a testament to our commitment to action. Our deeds matter more than our words, and we are proud to be working with Ghana to create a more prosperous future for all.
I am excited about the rich agenda that lies ahead for both the UK and Ghana. My visit to Ghana was an honour, and it reinforced our shared commitment to building a future where our nations thrive together. The UK-AIS will be a platform not only for economic cooperation but also for showcasing the vibrant diversity of African talent and the boundless potential that collaborative partnerships can unlock for the benefit of both our nations.
