Zeal Environmental Technologies Limited has paid fines of 18 inmates at the Sekondi Central Prisons to secure their release.
A total of GH¢50,000 was paid. The crimes for which they were convicted and sentenced include petty thievery.
Abdul S. Ganiyu, General Manager of Zeal Environmental Technologies Limited, explained that the gesture is part of his company’s social support programme.
“We have been supporting the release of prisoners for some years now. Let this pardon straighten your life; you shouldn’t come back to prison,” he admonished.
Prison, he said, is a place of correction; “so go out there and correct the mistakes you have done in the past and be very careful”.
A Prison Officer in-charge during their release advised them to be good citizens. “Don’t try to cut corners in life; work hard, be patient and truthful in your dealings with people.”
The Prison Officers added: “This is a joyous moment! Soberly reflect on what brought you here and let’s see a reformative life in you. Zeal, we know, has been paying fines from one court to the other and this should not be taken for granted”.
Kluvi Tse Asem, a 38-year-old fisherman and an inmate who was released, said: “During the closed fishing season last year at Jaway Wharf, I used a friend’s motor bike which was stolen from someone and that landed me to be sentenced to prison for nine months”.
Already, he said he had spent about five months at the Sekondi Central Prisons. He praised Zeal Environmental Technologies for the freedom and promised to be of good behaviour.
