Vivo Energy Ghana has donated a smoke evacuator with its accessories to the Department of Surgery of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The gesture by Vivo Energy, the exclusive marketer and distributor of Shell-branded products, forms part of its commitment to giving back to society. The donation was also in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility and the Sustainable Development Goals, goal 3.
The equipment and its accessories are expected to facilitate the delivery of quality healthcare.
Dr. Josephine Nsaful, consultant at the Breast Surgical Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, explained that the smoke evacuator is a useful equipment for the surgery department, as some of the equipment used during surgeries produce smoke.
The presence of the smoke evacuator, she noted, will help evacuate smoke during surgeries, making the environment safe for patients and staff.
“This equipment is very useful as part of our operating equipment. What it does is that, whilst operating it sucks away all the smoke. During breast surgeries and other types of surgeries, the use of the electrosurgical pencil generates a lot of smoke.
“And as we all know, secondhand smoke is risky to patients and staff including the doctors and nurses present at the theatre, so having the smoke evacuator at the theatre is a welcome news,” Dr. Josephine Nsaful said during the donation in Accra.
She thanked Vivo Energy Ghana for the support.
The Corporate Communications Manager at Vivo Energy Ghana, Shirley Tony Kum, said her outfit is committed to the fight against breast cancer.
She revealed that the need for a smoke evacuator was made known to Vivo Energy last October when the company collaborated with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in fighting breast cancer.
Away from this, Mrs. Tony Kum pleaded with drivers to drive safely during this festive season, saying: “As an oil marketing company during this period, we want to use this opportunity to encourage our drivers to be cautious on the road as we kept pushing during our campaign with the National Road Safety Authority. Drivers should be cautious on the road because many people depend on them”.
