Nestle Ghana has made a significant contribution to the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) by donating 38 tricycles to aid in the collection of plastic waste resources.
The donation is part of Nestle’s commitment to an agreement signed with the Pure Water Waste Collectors Association to support them through the ministry in collecting plastic waste and transporting it to recycling centres.
The minister of MESTI and Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, received the tricycles on behalf of the association – and said the issue of contaminated food and water, due to plastic waste entering the value chain, is a serious concern and Nestle’s donation of tricycles will help to mitigate these risks.
He added that the collaboration between Nestle and MESTI demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices.
“Nestle’ Ghana’s willingness to assist plastic waste collectors is commendable and aligns with government’s goals. The issue of contaminated food and water due to plastic waste entering the value chain is a serious concern, so government is grateful for the support of companies like Nestle,” he said.
Dr. Afriyie mentioned that the focus on plastics is just one part of their larger environmental initiative, and they have established a strong chain system to manage it with support from companies like Nestle.
Dr. Kwaku Afriyie expressed his gratitude for the assistance of organisations like Nestle and stated that government is committed to implementing visible programmes in the near-future.
He also noted that government is determined to make a significant impact on the environment, and partnerships with companies like Nestle are crucial in achieving such goals.
Dr. Afriyie further stated that government’s strict recycling policy and commitment to environmental initiatives, particularly in the area of plastics, is a positive step toward a more sustainable future. With the support of some companies, he said, they are making progress in managing plastic waste and addressing environmental concerns.
He stressed the importance of cooperation between government and the private sector in addressing environmental issues, and expressed appreciation to companies like Nestle for their support in these endeavours.
Chairman-Plastic Waste Collectors Association, Elvis Oppong, expressed his gratitude for the tricycles received on behalf of the association from MESTI and Nestle Ghana. He pledged to ensure their proper use and thanked both organisations for their contribution to the Association’s work.
