Three institutions, which serve as the legacy of the late Kwesi Essel Koomson have come together to purchase items worth GHc30,000 and have donated them to the victims of the Mepe flood, which resulted from the spillage of water by the Volta River Authority to protect the structural integrity of the Akosombo Dam. The items were donated by KEK Insurance Brokers Limited, the insurance brokerage which he founded and nurtured into the biggest in Ghana; and the two funds set up by the company to continue his philanthropic legacy – The Kwesi Essel Koomson Fund for Girls and the Kwesiakuma Foundation.
The three groups collectively donated bags of rice, cartons of canned foods, sanitary pad packs, boxes of diapers for babies and cartons of detergents. The staff also pitched in themselves to support the effort by donating used clothes which are in very good condition.
A statement from KEK Brokers explained that “As an institution we were founded by a man who believed strongly and deeply in assisting the less fortunate and showed his through many philanthropic ways while he was alive. Following his passing 13 years ago we wanted to achieve a way to continue his philanthropic legacy intentionally and did this by setting up the Fund and the Foundation.”
The Foundation and the Fund are financed through the transfer of 1% of the brokerage company’s annual profits and the company asserts that “Because this has be going on for almost a decade, supporting the less fortunate is beyond a board mandate for us, it has become a part of our corporate culture and ethos.”
Indeed, the company underpins this culture with the words of the Holy Bible as contained in the Book of Proverbs chapter 19 verse 17 which states that “ Whoever is generous to the less fortunate lends to the Lord and the Lord will surely repay him for his deed.”
Importantly the company similarly draws on Biblical values and attitudes for guidance in all its corporate activities and conduct which also determines its commitment to corporate integrity.
