Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAM) president, Alexander Nortey, has called for a review of demurrage charges at the country’s ports.
He said current rates are too high, and as such are hindering the smooth operation of businesses: “We are really looking for changes at the ports in terms of demurrage charges, so people are enabled to not only import but also export our goods and services”.
Mr. Nortey further emphasised need for improvements at the port to enhance efficiency and reduce costs for businesses, stressing that these changes are crucial for promoting economic growth and development in the country.
He made this comment during a business cocktail organised by Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAM) together with Chamber of Commerce and Industry France Ghana (CCIFG). The event aimed to foster connections and collaboration between companies from both chambers, as well as with other international partners.
Furthermore, he emphasised the necessity for a more streamlined economic system to facilitate trade and attract foreign businesses to establish operations in Ghana. He proposed that implementing tax exemptions and other incentives for businesses will be of great support to them, especially for businesses importing heavy-duty equipment to grow industries.
President-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sekou Coulibaly, urged government to address the current tax collection approach by Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
“We understand the challenges GRA faces, but we just hope that they go about their activities in fairness, especially understanding the contribution of our members to growth of the economy,” he said.
Event
The Chamber of Commerce expressed excitement about the opportunity to build bridges between French and Ghanaian companies, as well as with other global partners. The choice to collaborate with the Canadian Chamber was attributed to the synergies and historical ties between Canada and France.
The event was attended by representatives from various industries, and provided a platform for companies to exchange ideas and explore potential partnerships. The evening’s objective was to facilitate networking and relationship-building among businesses with similar interests and objectives.
