Rigworld International Services Limited, an upstream oil and gas service logistics company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) to acquire the needed equipment for practicals at the Petrol Engineering Department.

Also, the MoU, would facilitate for more research and innovation in industry as well as offer scholarships to brilliant but needed students.

Kofi Amoa-Abban, Chief Executive Officer of Rigworld in an address read for him noted that lack of capacity building, continues to bedevil the industry.

“The resultant effect of capacity gap between the level of competency and academia, is the teeming unemployment in the country” he said.

As a result of this, he said Rigworld deemed it necessary to support UMaT to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

“For many establishments, their inability to employ fresh graduates, is primarily because these students often fail to translate the theoretical concepts of their studies into practical concepts in the place of work. We at Rigworld, believe that today’s petroleum student at UMaT is tomorrow’s Managing Director of Rigworld” he added.

Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah was assured that the relationship will enable students get the much-needed practical engagements before transiting into the industry.

“For me, this engagement is important so that our students can have the hands-on practical approach to issues and build the appropriate skills that will make them ready for the world of work by the time they graduate” he said.

He pointed out that it is important for engineering students to acquire practical skills from corporate world.

He expressed hope that with Rigworld coming on board, to support the petrol engineering programme, students from the university will get the opportunity to do their practical training over there.
