SMT Ghana – premium equipment distributor and aftersales partner for mining, construction and industries – pledges itself to support schools throughout Ghana, and donates books and stationery to the Savelugu School for the Deaf alongside giving a course to the pupils in road safety, thanks to Volvo Trucks’ initiative ‘Stop, Look and Wave’.
SMT Ghana, the official distributor of Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Buses, and Volvo Penta in Ghana, has pledged its commitment to supporting schools throughout the country, especially those located in communities within its operational areas.
The company has donated books and mathematical sets to the Savelugu School for the Deaf, located in the Northern Region.
As part of the visit, SMT Ghana also held a Volvo Truck traffic safety course dubbed ‘Stop, Look and Wave’ for the school children, a global initiative by the Volvo Group that seeks to give children the world over the opportunity to have a better understanding of how trucks operate, and safety rules when encountering one. It involves the application of an easy to understand way of making children aware of the risks and how best to avoid them. They were taken through a practical demonstration on the safer use of roads by pedestrians.
The Savelugu School for the Deaf is a school located in the rural region of northern Ghana that takes in deaf children from the region to receive education in Mathematics and English, and also teaches them to use sign language in order to be able to communicate and express themselves.
Presenting the items, Mr. Alex Dutamby, Managing Director of SMT Ghana, expressed the company’s dedication and pride in giving back to society, especially the most vulnerable, as part of its corporate social responsibility and as part of the SMT Africa Group’s core values of caring, daring and sharing.
“Education especially means a lot to SMT Ghana and the Volvo Group, and this is in line with our values of caring and sharing, where we want to support schools for the students to continue to grow and learn, particularly toward those that don’t have the same chances as everybody else.”
Mr. Dutamby underscored the Volvo Truck Safety for the kids as a reinforcement of its mandate of allowing staff to continue to focus on training; and this, he believes, will provide the opportunity for the students to continue to grow and learn.
Mrs. Nora Naaso, Headmistress of the Savelugu School for the Deaf, was thankful to SMT Ghana for the donation and the training. She admitted that the school needed a whole lot of support; as such, the books had come at the opportune time to help the pupils.
Mrs. Naaso seized the occasion to urge corporate Ghana to come to the needs of the vulnerable in our society.
Mr. Jasper Agbakpe, Training Manager at SMT Ghana, a certified Volvo trainer for SMT Group, was supported by other officials of the company to take the students through the Volvo Truck traffic safety.
Mrs. Hilda Peasah, Marketing and Communication Director of SMT Ghana, urged the students to take their studies and road safety as well seriously. She informed that SMT Ghana, as part of its Volvo Road Safety training move around schools to educate the kids on road safety, will not hesitate to provide more support whenever it identifies areas that need help.
