AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has revamped a 1.4-kilometre road near Nhyieso on the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway at a cost of GH₵990,000.
Prior to its reconstruction the road was in a very derelict state, posing safety risks to motorists, pedestrians and nearby communities.
Therefore, in line with its commitment to positively impact the communities in which it operates, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine in consultation with the Department of Urban Roads decided to refurbish the dilapidated section with concrete pavement to ensure safer and more efficient transportation for businesses, travellers and community residents.
With an increase in traffic flow and steady urban growth of Obuasi and its surrounding environs, reconstruction and completion of the dilapidated section of Obuasi-Dunkwa highway is expected to facilitate a smoother drive for commuters, reduce travel time, improve commuter and community safety, as well as boost economic activity – signifying AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s steadfast commitment to contributing in the socio-economic development of its host communities and their environs in general.
Speaking at a short ceremony to inaugurate the refurbished road, Senior Manager-Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Emmanuel Baidoo, said the project will ensure the security and safety of people who use the road.
“We are running a number of interventions, ultimately contributing to building socio-economically self-sustaining communities in Obuasi. One strategic pillar of the 10-year Socio Economic Development Plan (SEDP) is contributing to enhancing our community infrastructure and security. For the fact that the mine has come back, we all know development projects are going to be spurred on – but that undoubtedly also creates a kind of space for security systems and security of the people to be threatened.
“We are delighted with the road reconstruction project’s successful completion. This milestone achievement underscores AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s commitment to its 10-year SEDP, which prioritises improving community infrastructure to bridge gaps, address critical needs and drive positive change for the communities in which it operates,” he said.
Mr. Baidoo expressed gratitude to the traditional and local authorities, the contractor, AGA Obuasi Mine project team and community members bordering the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway for their cooperation, expertise and support throughout the reconstruction process.
Chief Executive Officer-Obuasi Municipality (MCE), Elijah Adansi-Bonah, lauded AGA Obuasi Mine for this initiative – indicating that the revamped road will allow for easy access to the Obuasi Township, especially for neighbouring communities who use that stretch to access healthcare, education and other needs.
