Ernst and Youngs Ghana (EY Ghana), as part of its selected Ripples’ programme, organised ‘EY Gives Back Day’ on 28th July, 2023 at the St. Augustine’s Anglican Primary School, Nungua–Accra.
EY Ripples is EY’s Global Corporate Responsibility programme that brings together the global EY network in an effort to achieve one shared vision – to positively impact one billion lives by 2030.
Thus, EY Ghana donated school uniforms, cash, and other items. Staff also interacted with the pupils by having some fun activities with them, such as word games, dancing competition while giving out prizes.
Pamela des Bordes, Partner, Audit Services of EY Ghana, in an interview with the B&FT, stated that the beginning of every July is called EY Day, which marks their new financial year, so they decided that the company has to give back to the society in which they operate in the form of corporate social responsibility (CSR), hence, a committee was formed to assess the needs of the pupils.
They inquired and were told that uniforms form a major need for the pupils; and therefore, EY Ghana conducted a needs assessment, and came out with this programme.
Madam Pierrette Matanawi, the District Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), welcomed the gesture and observed that EY Ghana has been supporting St. Augustines’s Anglican Primary School by offering mentorship to the JSS students for some years now.
She noted that many deprived pupils do not have adequate uniforms, or wear worn-out ones; therefore, the gesture is both timely and welcomed. Lack of uniforms and other accessories prevents the pupils from attending school, so she was hopeful that EY Ghana’s assistance will serve as an incentive to the pupils to attend school regularly.
Hannah Aforiwaa Ayison, the Headmistress of the school, said it will also inspire the Nungua community to increase school enrolment of their wards since they would realise that the burden for the pupils’ upkeep is being supported.
