ASA Savings and Loans Limited, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission has planted over 200 tree seedlings at Somanya in the Eastern Region to support the Greening Ghana Project.
Among the trees planted are casia, lemon, orange, neem, mango, avocado, coconut dwarf and militia among others.
The trees were planted at Ogome Primary and JHS, Sra Presby Primary and Junior High School all at Somanya.
Teachers, students together with their heads were involved in the planting exercise.
Mr. Seidu Abdullai, Branch Manager at Somanya Business Centre (BC) of the company explained that the trees planted would regulate temperature, fight climate change, reduce soil erosion, repair damaged ecosystems and provide shade among others.
Mr. Eugene Owusu Biney, Ashaiman Area Manager of ASA Savings and Loans mentioned that “this is part of ASA’s corporate social responsibility and an-going project undertaking by the company to plant over 2,000 trees yearly in some selected institutions across the country”.
Mr. Richard Nartey Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Officer of the company pointed out that tree in some forest reserves and other areas in the country have been cut down and there is the need to plant more trees.
He tasked the schools to ensure regular watering of the trees to attain its purpose.
Madam Priscilla Asomani and Mrs. Gloria Asare, representatives of the Forestry Commission, Somanya said taking care of the trees should be a shared responsibility.
They encouraged the students to take interest in planting of trees and advised those who cut down trees indiscriminately to desist from such practice.
Mrs. Janet Mamle Atter, Headmistress of Ogome Primary school and Mr.Nelson Asomani Head of Ogome JHS both thanked Asa Savings and Loans Limited for contributing to protecting the environment by planting trees and promised they would take care of them.
Mr. Asomani said the gesture will go a long way to vegetate and prolong the existence of mankind and all living organisms on earth.
