Landlocked Shippers’ Councils, Government agencies and manufacturing industries have been engaged on the proposed port tariff review and restructuring being mooted by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The engagement which was engineered by the Ghana Shippers Authority is part of measures to collate views to be factored into the review to enhance consensus-building among key stakeholders.
It took place at the Ghana Shippers House on Thursday 18th May 2023 followed an initial meeting with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) on Tuesday 16th May 2023.
According to the GHPA, the proposal for the tariff adjustment is because of the rising cost of providing port services which is attributable to inflation.
The second in the series of meetings to be held on the matter, the GSA engaged the Shippers’ Councils of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Key Industry players such as the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) among others.
They sought clarification on pertinent issues including receipt and delivery charges and tariff schedules which have been revised by the proposed rates by the GPHA.
The Head of the Freight and Logistics Department of the GSA, Mr. Fred Asiedu-Dartey addressed their concerns and noted that, their feedback would be forwarded to the GPHA to be factored into the final decision.
He said that the GSA will continue with the engagements to collate the views of more stakeholders to enrich the review of the proposed tarrifs.
