The Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) has provided a 10-seat Kumasi Ventilated Improved Pit Latrine (KVIP) for the people of Komanfokrom in the Ahanta West municipality of Western Region, valued at GH¢284,000.
The facility, according to Nana Gyentsi Amoako X – chief of Komanfokrom, is in response to an appeal made to the company a few months ago.
Also, he said, this is in line with the SDG Goal 6 Target 6.2 – which states ‘End open defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030’.
“This is quicker than we anticipated and we are so much overjoyed; most of the houses within this town do not have toilet facility and the only KVIP we depend on is not in good shape at all. We thank GREL so much for this gesture, and we hope other organidations will emulate this example,” he added.
Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove Traditional Area, thanked GREL for its continued support in the municipality.
He said GREL has gained a reputation as a socially responsible company that understands and responds to the needs of its host communities. “GREL’s signature projects such as schools, social and health centres, water, sanitation among others across the over-90 communities where it operates in the Western, Central and Eastern Regions of Ghana are overwhelming.”
Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, who is also Chairman of the Association of Chiefs on whose land GREL operates (ACLANGO), commended the people of Komanfokrom for their good relationship with the company all these years. He urged the community to maintain the facility in order to ensure it has a longer life-span, saying “Appoint someone who will be taking a levy for the project’s maintenance”.
Perry Acheampong, Corporate Affairs Manager of GREL, thanked the chiefs, elders and people of Komanfokrom for their peaceful coexistence with GREL.
He commended the people of Komanfokrom for being with the company all these years without any agitations, and urged other communities to emulate the good example of Komanfokrom.
He urged the chief and entire community of Komanfokrom to help manage and maintain the facility, and promised there will be more engagements between GREL and the community.
