Editorial: World Press Freedom Day

0

Today marks the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.

Three decades have passed since it was proclaimed in 1993.

This notwithstanding, media freedom, safety of journalists, and freedom of expression are increasingly under attack, which impacts the fulfilment of other human rights.

We use the occasion to congratulate practitioners for their tireless efforts in upholding the principles of press freedom and for their dedication to informing the public and holding those in power accountable.

The media’s work is critical to the functioning of our democracy and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate and reliable information.

We urge all to continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism – including accuracy, fairness and impartiality – and also embrace innovation to adapt to the fast-changing media landscape.

Happy World Press Freedom Day!
