Regent University College of Science and Technology has celebrated a transformers summit as part of its Parliamentary Week.
The event aims to educate students on how to develop their leadership skills as well as help people understand why servant leadership remains important.
Dubbed ‘Effective leadership as a change agent’, the summit held in Accra sought to help students identify what they intend to do as leaders, and also expose them to opportunities outside academics such as building on their talents and embracing innovations that could serve as a source of employment.
Chief Executive Officer of Africa Health Supplies (AHS) Limited, Albert Ankrah, stated that as a leader you must portray good qualities; such us being accommodating and being able to serve others rather than taking control.
“I think, first and foremost, there should be the willingness to help. And I mentioned that if you have a servant leadership approach initially, it is what you want to do to help; and in your bid to help, you will realise that you won’t just be helping or impacting but also be enabled to make ends meet for yourself and your family – and that is the beauty of it.
“I was encouraging the students here that this is the time for them to start volunteering their time, their energies; and this is the time that they should dedicate to learning life-long lessons which will impact them positively,” he added.
Mr. Ankra stated that to be an effective leader in today’s world, one needs to appreciate the importance of technology.
“For a university like Regent University, I’m excited because you are at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. Every course on this campus has technology imbedded in it because that is really what is driving the global economy today; so whether you are doing medicine, whether you are doing computer science, robotics – whatever it is, you should have at the back of your mind, how do I apply technology so that we can become more effective at what we do? And I believe that if you can focus on that, you will become a better leader.”
Dzifa Amoa, a communications and customer experience consultant said: “It’s something that we’ve incorporated in our plans for this year, to include young people in what we are doing because they need the exposure”.
Ms. Amoa in her final remarks to the students stated: “You need to identify what it is that you intend to do and always look around you, because there is always an opportunity for you to use the things that you are passionate about to make an income and to create opportunities for other people. So, these are the best things that you can use to bring about change”.
