The Rwandan community in Ghana have celebrated National Heroes Day in an interactive event held in Accra that brought together over 100 members.
The celebration was attended by Hon. Senator Faustin Munyakabera who made an on-line keynote presentation on the history and values of heroism in Rwanda dating from the pre-colonial era through to its contemporary history including the heroism that characterized the struggle for Rwanda’s liberation.
“From its founding, Rwanda was established through the heroic acts of her people and to this day, acts of heroism continue to inspire our various initiatives,” Senator Munyakabera said.
An interactive Intergenerational discussions followed with deeper reflection on how Rwandans in the Diapora in their daily lives can continue to emulate these values and teach them especially to the young ones. It was inspiring to see many interventions by the youth showcasing their commitment to emulate the good example given by their elders, both those alive and the many who had to pay the ultimate price with their lives.
In her remarks, High Commissioner of Rwanda to Ghana Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira reiterated the message shared earlier President Paul Kagame when Heroes Day was celebrated at the National level.
Addressing the gathering, majority of whom are youth students and young professionals living in Ghana, the High Commissioner Kirabo also asked them to keep up the courage and commitment in upholding this legacy and even do more now that we have more capacity, an enabling environment and supportive visionary leadership.
On his part, the Chairperson of the Rwandan Community in Ghana Francois Xavier Bikorimana encouraged parents to use the examples of heroism replete in Rwanda’s history to teach their children to emulate the good values of dignity, excellence and boldness that defined the celebrated national heroes. The day concluded with a get together and social interaction.
