PhD candidate Fawzia Muhammed Zuka advances coastal resilience and fisheries management

Fawzia Muhammed Zuka, a PhD candidate in Integrated Coastal Zone Management at the African Centre of Excellence in coastal resilience from the University of Cape Coast, is making waves in the field of environmental science. With an impressive array of international accolades to her name, Zuka’s work not only highlights her exceptional academic prowess but also underscores the critical importance of coastal resilience in the face of global climate change.

Fawzia’s journey began with a strong foundation in economics, earning both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics with a focus on Resource Economics. Her academic background provided her with a unique perspective on the economic implications of environmental issues, driving her passion for coastal zone management.



In 2019, Fawzia was awarded the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience PhD Scholarship. This highly competitive scholarship is awarded to only a select few students across the African sub-region, recognizing those who demonstrate exceptional potential and commitment to addressing the challenges faced by coastal regions. The scholarship not only provided financial support but also offered Fawzia the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts and researchers, further enhancing her knowledge and skills.

Two years later, in 2021, Fawzia’s outstanding academic record and research potential were recognized once again when she was awarded the Global Affairs Canada Scholarship. This award is given to students who exhibit strong academic achievements and a clear vision for their future contributions to global issues. The scholarship enabled Fawzia to engage with international scholars and policymakers at the University of British Columbia broadening her perspective and enriching her research on coastal resilience.

In 2022, Fawzia achieved another milestone by winning the highest research grant at the African Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience. This grant is awarded to researchers whose projects show significant promise in advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions for coastal management. Fawzia’s research stood out for its rigorous methodology and practical implications, earning her the top grant and further cementing her reputation as a leading researcher in her field.

Fawzia’s research has had a profound impact on the understanding of fisheries management in the context of gender. Her work addresses critical issues of vulnerability of fishing communities, habitat loss, and the socio-economic impacts of empowerment on household welfare.  By integrating scientific research with practical management strategies, Fawzia aims to develop sustainable solutions that protect coastal ecosystems and support the livelihoods of people who depend on them.
