MTN Ghana has awarded some of its hardworking Mobile Money (MoMo) merchants and agents in the northern sector of the country.

The awards ranged from mobile phones, television sets, fridges, motorbikes as well as certificates. The ‘Best MoMo Merchant’ went to Kingdom Books and Stationery office on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus, who won a motorbike and GH¢50,000.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Mobile Money Ghana Ltd., Haruna Shaibu, explained that mobile money activities thrive on having hardworking agents and merchants who drive activities on the ground.

In that regard, it is necessary for MTN to show appreciation to its hardworking foot soldiers and also encourage others to work harder in the coming year.

“We are very grateful for the work that they do every time in acquiring new customers and also serving our customers across the length and breadth of the country. This is an opportunity for us to say thank you for their continuous service and support for the business.

“We are awarding about 1000 agents across the country, and 200 of our foot soldiers are also being recognised as well as a cross-section of our merchants. So, we are covering a large chunk of our base. For us, it is so important because this year has been challenging for a number of reasons, and these agents and merchants have stood the test of time and supported the business; so, we think a good way to thank them is by celebrating them,” he said.

Mr. Shaibu further expressed optimism that amidst the numerous challenges, such as the Electronic Transaction levy (E-levy), MoMo patronage should see a major recovery next year.

“We know the state of the economy which is impacting people’s ability to spend. We also had to deal with issues around SIM registration and E-levy – we had some initial customer reaction to it – but we have seen people come back in terms of transactions.

“We believe that the service is resilient and we have seen the recovery; and we believe that with education and sensitisation, we should be able to bounce back strongly. What is important is that this service is important for the socio-economic development of the country and we all have to support it because it also provides value to our customers as well,” he said.
