Ghana Post has embarked on a tree-planting exercise to commemorate the World Post Day celebration themed ‘Post for Planet’, as the company’s quota to environmental sustainability.
In a speech delivered by the Board Chairman of Ghana Post, George Hayford Afedzi, he stated that this year’s theme is aimed at conserving natural resources and protecting global ecosystems in order to support the health and wellbeing of people.
“Following our quest to protect our planet, Ghana Post’s presence in all 16 regions of the country will take up tree-planting seriously as an annual project to help save planet earth. I call on individuals, especially workers of Ghana Post, to be conscious of our environment and make tree-planting part of our activities,” he said.
Globally, the postal sector contributes massively to employment with more than 5 million people working from more than 600,000 offices in 192 countries. It delivers hundreds of billions of postal items per year.
Thus Mr. Afedzi said: “It is now clearer than ever that the Post, being the world’s largest logistics network, must align with principles of the ecosystem to grow the economy; hence, we position Ghana Post to respond to the call to accelerate the green transition of the economy,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, was the Director of the Post, Sulley Lugey, who stated that ‘Post for Plant’ is in line with the global call for environmental sustainability which falls in line with the Green Ghana agenda to drive progress on social and economic development goals.
“Fighting climate change, forest degradation and the recent upsurge in illegal mining is the collective responsibility for all humans; and being green is a commitment to sustainable lifestyles which require a real plan of action for people, planet and posterity. We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path,” he mentioned.
Also in the message delivered by the Deputy Managing Director of Universal Post Union (UPU) Tabi Amposah on behalf of the Director-General, Mahiki Metoko, it stated that World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9 to create awareness of the Post’s indispensable role in the everyday lives of people and businesses.
He further stated that the fight for climate change is not a small task, and hence, requires collective effort to improve climate mitigation and create a better and safer world for all.
“Real action requires real investment, but this investment will pay dividends toward our future. We must think about our impact beyond our office, our networks and our borders. Every person, business and nation on this planet has a stake in this fight. We must all work together to secure a better future for generations to come,” he said.
The celebration also involved activities like a health-walk and free medical screening for the staff, customers and people in the vicinity.
World Post Day is an establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a United Nations body for all postal administrations in the world, and it is celebrated each year on October 9 in about 192 member-countries.
