One of the strongest pillars on which our successes over the past 50 years rest is our people. As one of the oldest banks in Ghana, UMB’s human capital is blessed with staff whose dedication and commitment to the Bank have been nothing but exceptional and exemplary. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, some staff of the Bank shared their thoughts and wishes for the Bank.

Mr. Benjamin Adjei, Head of Operation, Osu Main Branch (35 years at the bank): “ I joined the Bank in 1987, as a messenger-clerk at the then head-office in the Swanmill Offices in central Accra. By  the grace of God, I am retiring after 35 years as the Head of Operations of one of the main branches of the Bank.

“I love UMB. The Bank has had such a positive impact on the country and I am proud to have played my small part in some of the key milestones in Ghana’s economic history, including the AGC floatation in the 90’s. I also feel so proud that some of the young chaps who joined the bank are now rising to the top of a number of the banks in the country. It is a testament to the mettle of UMB.”

Dorothy Hackman, Head of Operations Bank Junction Mall (30 years at the bank): “UMB is family and perhaps that is why I have never felt compelled to switch.  I have been in service  for the last 30 years  with the Bank. UMB  has always made it clear that if one was honest, hardworking and focused on customers, the Bank would take care of you. This plus the collegiate atmosphere with colleagues is what has made staff passionate over the years.

“The human resource strategy of developing human capital has allowed many of us to grow our careers in the bank. I joined as a secretary, but through the support of the bank developed myself. I am very proud of the Bank and I urge my colleagues to always  live by the rules of honesty and a focus on customers.”

Audrey Bulley, Senior Officer – E-banking (30 years at the bank): “I am proud to have served through the Banks evolution from a purely Merchant Bank, through to universal banking and through to rebranding from  Merchant Bank to the Universal Merchant Bank. I think there has been improvement and growth in our life as a bank, and I must say I think the current S.P.E.E.D. values of the Bank through focus our effort.

“I am also amazed at how much more we are able to do for our customers with technology. From an era of typewriters and telex, I am proud that we have kept pace with the market, including launching the UMB Sika virtual assistant recently.”

Akwelley Bulley – General Manager,  Human Resource: “It is remarkable that all our long-serving staff continue to urge us all as colleagues to be dedicated, honest, hard-working and focused on the customer. It is a charge the UMB team intends to live up to as we forge our way to our 100th Anniversary.”
