The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has said the prompt response to the redevelopment of Appiatse Community, in the Western Region, would bring huge relief to residents and victims of the recent mining-related incident.
The General Secretary of GMWU, Mr. Abdul Moomin Gbana, while commiserating with the affected persons, noted that the realisation of the commitments by all stakeholders towards restoring the community should be keenly prioritised.
It is against this background that the Union donated a cheque of GH¢40,000 (the equivalent of 800 bags of cement) to the ‘Relief Fund’ set up by the government to, among other things, see to the immediate restoration of the Appiatse community.
Mr. Moomin Gbana said: “the Union predominantly operates in the mining industry of this country, and many of our members live in mining communities and work in these mines. So, any form of disaster that befalls a mining community directly impact us.”
Given this, he said the Appiatse incident is of utmost concern to GMWU, while revealing that some members and their families were also affected.
While presenting the cash donation, he added that: “as Ghana Mine Workers Union, we must all join hands with Ghanaians to bring some relief as quickly as possible to our brothers and sisters in the Appiatse community.
We hope that the government’s determination and commitment to rebuilding the community would be done as quickly as possible so that we can get some restoration soon.”
The Municipal Chief Executive of Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly, Isaac Dasamani, who received the donation indicated that efforts continue to provide relief to all the affected people despite some occasional challenges.
Given the huge number of persons who were affected, he said they are continuing to make provision for tents to be able to accommodate all the affected persons. This includes some 750 persons including children who are being catered for, and 50 others also accommodated at the Bogoso Golden Hotel.
He said: “because of COVID-19 we don’t want to overcrowd them in one place, so we continue to provide spacious grounds for them to settle.”
Mr. Dasamani, on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Appiatse Community, expressed gratitude to the Ghana Mine Workers Union for their support towards the reconstruction of the Appiatse Community.
He committed to ensuring that all the resources being provided to the community would be devoted for the purpose for which they were provided to quicken the reconstruction work.
