- biggest insurance names honoured at 4th Ghana Insurance Awards
Most exports leaving the shores of the country do not have insurance cover, a situation which could impede the penetration of local products into the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) market, Anthony Nyame-Baafi, the Technical Advisor, Multilateral, Regional and Bilateral Trade at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, has noted.
To remedy the situation, he said the government was working with the Ghana Reinsurance Company and other insurance industry players to support producers that want to have their products insured.
“This is to help insure their goods against losses and breakages. So, the expectation is that they are going to collaborate to enable us to do that so that when you produce for export to any of the African countries, you are assured that all your risks are covered,” he noted.
Mr. Nyame-Baafi said this during the 4th Ghana Insurance Awards in Accra, themed: ‘Rewarding standards in the insurance industry’ and noted that while all imports come with insurance cover, not all exporting companies had insurance covers, which is a great concern to the government, especially with the operationalisation of AfCFTA.
He is of the firm view that insured exports will boosts foreign buyers’ confidence and stimulate demand for Ghana-made products and more importantly, contribute to making local manufacturers competitive.
