GSE boss honored with Gold Award at 4th Business Leadership Excellence Awards

The Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Peterson Ekow Afedzie, has been conferred with the Gold Award at the recently-held fourth edition of the Ghana Business Leaders Excellence Awards.

Mr. Afedzie, who has been with the Exchange since its inception 31 years ago, has risen through the ranks, culminating with his elevation to his current role effective January 1, 2020, received the award “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the economic development of Ghana in the area of Stock Exchange operations.”

Having spent the entire duration of his professional career at the Accra bourse, Mr. Afedzie has extensive experience in the capital market, some of which were spent as the Head of Marketing, Research, and Systems and as General Manager of the Exchange.



Under his tutelage, the GSE has witnessed a sustained turnaround, as he has been able to steer the bourse from a downturn following the energy and financial sector crises, to closing last year as the fastest-growing Exchange on the continent, in spite of the prevailing pandemic.

During his tenure as Deputy Managing Director and now as Managing Director of the GSE, he has spearheaded strategic initiatives such as the automation of the operations of the Exchange – Trading, Clearing and Settlement; established the Central Securities Depository; as well as the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) and the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM), where he sist as a member of the Governing Committee.

A member of the Governing Council of the Ghana Securities Industry Association, Mr. Afedzie also served as Vice President of and remains a member of the Executive Committee of African Securities Exchange Association (ASEA).

He has represented the GSE at key international events including the World Exchange Congress (London, 2008; Madrid, 2009; Monaco, 2011 and Chicago, 2012); New York Stock Exchange/ Euronext Africa Investor Programme, USA (2011); Capital Market Developmemnt in Africa programme organised by the African Development Bank, Ethiopia (2011); and the Africa Bonds Market Conference, Kenya (2011).

“He has been one of the strong pillars behind the considerable success of the Ghana Stock Exchange and his expertise and reputation have served continually to as an attraction to the investing public,” a portion of a citation in his honour reads.
