Yinson Ghana has provided an off-grid rooftop solar system for the Awunakrom Pretea Municipal Assembly (MA) Basic Primary and Junior High School in the Ahanta West Municipality in the Western Region.
This, is to allow its 312 students to benefit from a more conducive and comfortable learning environment.
The 5KW system is designed to provide uninterrupted power for lighting, a television set, fans, a refrigerator and laptops without the support of the national grid.
The system will run the appliances directly from the solar energy generated and store excess energy in batteries for use during the night and cloudy days.
The school, which is near Yinson’s operation base at Kejabril in the Ahanta West Municipality is not currently connected to the national grid.
Yinson, which is an oil and gas company responsible for the operations and maintenance of the FPSO John Agyekum Kufour located at Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) also provided each of the school’s twelve classrooms with lights, ceiling fans, washroom lights, and twenty security lights for the perimeter.
Additionally, Yinson supplied a refrigerator and fire extinguishers for each of the three classroom blocks.
The solar energy system was officially commissioned during a ceremony held at the school.
Edward Mensah, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Coordinator of Yinson Ghana explained that the school’s need for a power supply came to light in 2019, when Yinson was looking for schools in the local area to which it could donate laptops.
“When we realized that the Awunakrom Pretea MA School did not even have a power supply, we shifted our focus towards helping with this essential need,” he said.
“The students can now use the classrooms for evening classes, and we hope that the ceiling fans will provide comfort in the classrooms for both students and teachers,” he added.
“This initiative aligns with Yinson’s CSR mission of promoting quality education, and our Group-wide focus on contributing to the global transition towards a sustainable energy system” he said.
Benjamin Yankey, headmaster of Awunakrom Pretea M/A School pointed out that the school has been doing well in terms of academics.
He said the main challenge has been electricity which has hindered the progress of work.
He expressed appreciation to Yinson Ghana for their support and appealed to other institutions to support the school which has been in existence for over two decades.
Mr. Mark Adoba Adatekey, Ahanta West Municipal Director of Education stated that education must be prioritized by everybody.
“This is a public school, which should not be supported by government alone but individuals, philanthropists, institutions among others” he said.
He urged the school authority to maximum the use of power to improve the quality of education.
