Despite the surge in COVID-19 cases in Ghana, government has assured that schools will remain open as it monitors the situation for appropriate response.
Delivering a speech to update the nation on the fight against COVID-19, President Akufo-Addo said the decision to keep schools open is due to the low numbers of cases recorded so far.
The president, however, urged school authorities and teachers to enforce the COVID 19 guidelines provided by the Ghana Education Service.
He assured that the Ghana Health Service will continue its surveillance in schools to help contain the spread of the disease.
The President cautioned that the situation could get worse, if the guidelines are not followed as countries such as the UK and South Africa record new variants of the disease.
“We should all understand that our current situation could get very dire if efforts are not made, both on the part of Government and by you, the citizenry, to help contain the virus.”
As part of measures aimed at reducing the spread, President Akufo-Addo also announced restrictions on funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances, and parties, with no more than 25 people at a time.
In addition, “beaches, night clubs, cinemas, and pubs continue to be shut. Our borders by land and sea remain closed,” the president said.
He added that all workplaces, public and private, are to employ a shift-system for workers, in addition to the use of virtual platforms for business or work. Conferences and workshops can take place with all the appropriate protocols.
