One hundred and seventy-one law students have been inducted into the Ghana School of Law – Kumasi Campus, to commence academic studies towards attaining the status as learned practitioners while augmenting the current numbers of legal practitioners in the country upon completion.
The Ag. Director of Legal Education, Mr. Maxwell Opoku-Agyeman, said the induction is meant to usher students from academic legal thinking to the path of legal practice.
He noted that the journey to professional legal practice begins with the induction, and, therefore, entreated the new students to make their lives reflect the attribute of future lawyers. “The fruits of the legal profession, which you aspire to join, is hard work, integrity, moral uprightness, honesty, respect for the bench and your seniors.”
He acknowledged that 2020/21 the academic year has been most challenging for the management of Ghana School of Law given the scourge of COVID-19 as well as the monumental increase in intake of students, from 128 in 2019/20 academic year to 1,000 in 2020/21 academic year.
The development, he said, has led to the adoption of a triple track class system.
Mr. Opoku-Agyeman, therefore, appealed for help towards the development of more academic facilities at the Law Village at Legon to enable the school to carry on with academic work in subsequent years.
The Vice President of the Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana Bar Association, Mrs. Marie-Louise Simmons, also speaking at the induction ceremony, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), urged students to desist from holding themselves as lawyers to indulge in any conduct that might not inure to their professional good.
The Supervising High Court Judge in the Ashanti Region, Justice Kofi Akrowiah, also advised the students at length to live by the codes of conduct and ethics of the legal profession while taking their studies seriously.
