The Ghana TVET Coalition recently held its maiden national general conference with the aim of consolidating its efforts at coalition building to embark on the objective of complementing government effort at the implementation of a successful delivery of free, quality and accessible TVET in Ghana.
Over 30 participants drawn from trade associations, training institutions, civil society organization, industry and academia from across the country participated in the virtual inception meeting.
In his presentation, Mr. Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey, member of the technical working group pointed out that the Coalition has a specific mandate of ensuring increase in TVET access and participation from the current 5% to a targeted 25% by 2030. “Our work will focus on complementing the work of government to ensure that TVET is not only free, but also well patronized to receive the needed recognition that will promote increased participation to generate employment.”
He disclosed that the Coalition will strive to address issues bordering on misconception about TVET, while focusing on the effective coordination of the sector to make it demand driven by aligning training to specific labour requirements.
Mr. Ocansey further stated that together with other stakeholders, in the coming year they will embark on nationwide advocacy initiatives to mobilize demand for TVET, including stated focus on females in male dominated trades.
He implored stakeholders present to increase their sensitization and awareness creation efforts on TVET issues that will further deepen the engagement and education in the sector.
Convener and technical working group member, Mr. Bailon Afful disclosed that though the Coalition is young, it has participated in major national projects such as the development of the Civil Society manifesto for the two main political parties prior to the recent general elections, undertaken research for the Ghana Free TVET Report, and has close working relations with several other local and international partners.
