The Savelugu Municipal Assembly has handed over four completed Community Health Planning and Services (CHIPS) compound projects to the Ghana Health Service (GHS). The facilities will serve four deprived rural communities within the assembly to aid in quality healthcare delivery.
The CHPS compounds are to help curb rampant maternal mortality cases being recorded in the beneficiary communities – Pigu, Tigla, Nabogu and Yong. They would also reduce the distance residents travel to access health services.
The health facilities come with consulting and delivery rooms, as well as other rooms for clinical services, outpatient department and staff resting and changing rooms.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people to inaugurate the facilities, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, the Municipal Chief Executive for Savelugu said, the provision of the facilities would help end the situation where the sick, in the predominantly remote farming communities, had to travel long distances to seek medical treatment. “Due to the distance the residents travel to access healthcare, most residents feel reluctant to go for health care when they are sick and this sometimes lead to complications,” she said.
According to her, the health needs of the people in the assembly were among the top priorities of government and that the assembly was working hard to improve all health facilities in the area. She urged the communities to ensure good maintenance of the facilities.
A representative of the Savelugu Hospital, Musah Bashiru, who received the keys to the facilities on behalf of the communities, commended the assembly for the effort, saying it would go a long way to address the needs of persons living in the area. “We are excited that the projects have been successfully completed and assured of professional services from the health personnel,” he said.
He gave the assurance that the facilities would render 24-hour health service to the people within the communities and its surrounding towns. The chiefs and people of the communities also praised the assembly and government for addressing one of their plights.
