Having an eye for relevance has always been on my mind and many others like myself. Who is this for? This is for us, the people who believe in Excellence, Humanity, Identity and Harmony. Are these of relevance? I say yes, what do you say?
Our world today has a vast scope of mediums to amplify the words, thoughts and perspectives of people, which is good. I however cannot shake off the strong urge in recent times to draw attention to the relevance of finding our language in communication.
Relevance as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary is “the degree to which something is related or useful to what is happening or being talked about.” A definition I agree with, I must stay. Linking up to this, communication is defined as the process of understanding and sharing meaning. Pearson, J., & Nelson, P. (2000).
I believe you love this classy definition as well. The core purpose to start communicating as I am doing through this article is to bring understanding and meaning to a particular topic. My topic however could mean so much at the same time depending on my own status as a sender and yours as a receiver mean so little. We can agree that it is not enough for anyone of us who has access to major or minor channels of communication to see content as a standalone pack. Rather than standalone I incite us to see it as a cocktail influenced by our culture, experiences, folklores, advice, presentation skills and intensions.
Hello, you! Hold on till I answer your question on the need for this communication especially now as we draw close to ending the year amidst this shared pandemic.
Did you know, more people with and without the novel corona virus are not only battling with the virus itself rather the summed up stress, anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty. A situation that translate into fear, panic and stereotyped thinking amongst others, a negative trigger to healthy living.
Did you also know; the negative way of thinking translates into specific produced hormones? These hormones from our brain and other organ cells, eventually reduce the strength of the immune system? May I say we are not far from these facts. Our inner self, our friends and family, our communities and networks share similar facts. Facts that can be drawn from the conscious, preconscious and unconscious awareness scale -A concept on development credited to the great work of the famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
Because I am doing well to get back to my core message, I will skip sharing the figures given by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) network of economic regulators on how our sources of livelihood is been affected by this pandemic. With this accessible online, please do well to however take care not to be over obsessed with all the information of the day.
What then is my submission for today? My submission is that, we as receivers and transmitters of understanding and meaning will make more tangible impact once we find our relevant language in communicating. Relevant language that is created by the balance of spiritual and physical excellence, compassion that is human centered, accommodation of identities and purposed driven actions towards harmony. In this VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous), balance is a necessity.
- Balance of Spiritual and Physical Excellence: allows us to find and accept our uniqueness and strengths. This also include internal and external opportunities, challenges, threads and support. Decide what positive you wish to do with them. I call this the burning fire that cooks good food for the body, that fire that provides warmth, light and protection. You have the power to decide what to do with your outstanding self, knowledge and creativity, make it count.
- Balance of compassion that is Human Centered: there is everything right if we take our raw talents and polish them to bring a beautiful glow out, sharped and effective. Adding virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and finally love breeds footprints that leads to relevance. Change is happening and in other to either make the change or lead the change, new skill sets and mind sets are needed in how we work and live life. Hard work, diligence, sacrifices and strong decisions have to be made. So yes balance that is human centered equips. This kind of compassion allows our careers to excel but also our lives to flourish. Balance that helps us to have family life and work life, that allows us to rest, speak politely to one another and enjoy nature while still working effectively. This is closely linked to identities.
- Balance that accommodates Identities: embracing our reference points, our roots, our uniqueness and realities of our lives. It is important to see that our yesterday can become a solution to our tomorrow. Many lessons can be captured from discoveries, stories, application of systems and more. We owe ourselves a present identity that takes the totality of itself and apply it to an innocent future. Now and moving forward no matter how painful our experiences have been it does not have the power to destroy our future unless we allow it. Am I speaking as an African Woman? Yes, its fine with me because I choose to and I believe that alone is relevant content to communicate as you also choose to accommodate it.
The accession of finding our relevant language in communication, is still open until we connect well with purposed driven actions towards harmony. This would be for another day but for now, I happen to see, (I stand to be corrected) that there are more facts that we believe than truths that we don’t and that means, purpose will be hazy until we all put into perspective the information we hear and listen to are from humans just like us, the environment we have created, the role models we celebrate and the statuesque we look at. Can you find your relevant language in communicating to your economic circles, psychology circles, health circles, power circles and family circle?
The need for our language to be relevant during communication brings meaning and understanding. Allow me share a favorite quote,
’Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established; By knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.’ Pro 24:3-4
I wish you a fruitful week.
