The former Special Peace Envoy of International Alert, Mr. Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, does not foresee any violence or disturbance before, during and after the 2020 elections which would lead to the dislocation of Ghana’s peaceful democratic march.
He said Ghanaians were generally ‘civil and peace-conscious’ – who may shout the loudest during political campaigns, but will not travel beyond that to engage in activities which would negatively impact the credentials of Ghana as a maturing democratic state.
Mr. Addai-Sebo, who is also a former Special Advisor to the OAU Secretary-General, Amara Essy, made the observation during the Lead For Ghana (LFG) 2020 Alumni Summit in Accra at the weekend.
He said Ghanaian politicians behave like Lawyers/Legal practitioners who hurl invectives at each other in building up their defence to support their cases, but end up hugging one another or sharing pleasantries out of the courtroom.
Mr. Addai-Sebo however had harsh words for the country’s political leaders – particularly those after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s government – for failing the nation as a result of their corrupt practices and lack of commitment toward genuine development of the country; and advised that the youth of Ghana must find a way to reject political systems which do not work for lifting the masses out of poverty and economic hardship.
He commended Leap For Ghana on its thoughtful agenda of providing quality and practical education to youth of the country, which he finds to be one of the real requirement for the country’s social and economic growth and development.
Mr. Dan Dotse, Chief Executive of Lead For Ghana, said Ghana appears to be losing the fight against corruption, and urged the people to stand up and fight against corruption as that is the only way to get out of the canker – stressing that the time to do so is now, as any further delay will not be helpful for the country’s future.
He said it is for such objectives that LFG is determined to make an impact with right education of the youth and inculcate in them the spirit of nationalism with a can-do attitude, especially in rural communities, for inclusive transformation of the country.
As part of the day’s events, 24 Fellows of LFG were inducted into office as Alumni.
