The day’s celebration came with a call on the general public to wash their hands with soap under running water as it is the surest way to prevent contracting diseases, especially the new coronavirus.
This year’s Global Handwashing Day was on the theme ‘Hygiene For All’ and was marked at Miracle Faith Dunamis Ministry at Adjei Kojo, a suburb of Ashaiman, to raise awareness among over 70 community women of the importance of washing hands with soap to prevent diseases and save lives.
Director for Social Protection and Community Development, Clara Sowah urged the public to maintain the culture of handwashing with soap under running water because it will save them the problem of diarrhea, respiratory issues, and all other issues. “Whether coronavirus or no coronavirus we should maintain hand washing as a culture in the communities, schools, markets and work places,” she advised.
Head of Social Protection and Community Development Unit, Theresah Anaafi, demonstrated proper way of hand washing with soap under running water and alternative method of providing own running water at home. She reminded the women about the need to make hand washing a part of their daily activities such as before cooking, before eating, before feeding children, visiting the toilet, etc.
She said clean hands is a recipe for good health so therefore women should promote effective hand washing behavior among children. Participants also received entrepreneurial skills in sanitizer and liquid soap production to enhance their living standard and also improve individual handwashing at home.
The beneficiaries were grateful to Lions Club international and Department of Social Protection and Community Development for the opportunity offered them as entrepreneurs as it will help grow markets and increase employment prospects.
