Gold Fields Ghana, the operator of the Tarkwa and Damang gold mines in the Western Region, has donated seven disinfection chambers to the Ga Mantse to support efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Ga communities.
The fully automated chambers are fitted with handwashing facilities and a full-body sanitizing system that disinfects the entire body and feet.
The seven locally built disinfection chambers, which cost GHS150,000, have been deployed to various stool lands within Accra central such as Sempe, Otublohun, Abola, Asere Tsonor, Gbese, Asere and Akanmaijen, where residents will be able to use them free of charge. Users of the chambers will be mandated to wear face masks and have their temperature checked before entry.
Presenting the chambers to the Ga Mantse and traditional leaders of the Ga state, Theophilus Otchere, Regional Head of Supply Chain at Gold Fields said the company was committed to the fight against COVID-19 in communities.
“When the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, reached out to Gold Fields Ghana to support this laudable initiative, we did not refuse because helping communities to fight COVID-19 aligns with our core value of safety.”
He added: “We are hopeful that these disinfection chambers will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and save lives. It is also important for the chambers to be well maintained so that many people can benefit from them”.
Receiving the chambers on behalf of the Ga state, the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, expressed profound gratitude to Gold Fields for honouring its promise to support the initiative.
The Ga Mantse noted that the disinfection chambers would boost efforts by the Ga Traditional Council to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Ga communities and keep the people safe.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II urged the people of Ga Mashie to continue observing all recommended preventive measures, including wearing of face masks and regular handwashing. He also called on other companies to support the initiative to provide more disinfection chambers to communities.
Mr Otchere said Gold Fields has so far committed over US$850,000 to help contain the spread of COVID-19 at its operations and host communities, we well as support government’s efforts to keep the population safe.
