The Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has supported education supervisors in the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East district of the Ashanti Region with eight motorbikes, as part of efforts to contribute toward the improvement of local education.
At the motorbikes’ presentation, the Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr. Eric Asubonteng, noted that the gesture is meant to complement the work of educational authorities, enabling them to effectively carry out their supervisory roles.
He explained that the donation forms part of several initiatives started by Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine under the three-year ‘Social Management Plan (SMP)’, to among others improve lives of the people.
He said the Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is committed to delivering its promises under the Social Management Plan, and is hopeful that the interventions made will serve the purpose for which they were made.
The items were given at the back of a capacity building programme for some selected educational authorities of the Ghana Education Service (GES) within Obuasi, Adansi and its environs.
A representative of the GES who took delivery of the motorbikes expressed gratitude for the initiative taken by the company.
She said prior to this presentation, the Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine had already donated some 1,000 pieces of furniture for use in schools within the Obuasi East district and Obuasi Municipality.
She said the motorbikes – particularly during this era of coronavirus pandemic – will help the monitoring activities of educational authorities to ensure that the lives of students and pupils are not in any way endangered.
The Divisional Chief of Eduabiase Traditional Area, while commending Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for the gesture, also entreated the company to equally consider employing the skills of some beneficiaries of the educational initiatives.
He also charged users of the motorbikes to deepen their maintenance culture and also ensure they are used in the purposes for which they were given.
In May 2019, last year, the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine launched the SMP – which among other areas focuses prominently on education with the objective of contributing to increasing pass rates in the Basic Education Certificate Examination at Obuasi from 81% to 90% by 2021.
Initiatives to support education under the SMP include: Senior High School Examination Improvement Programme; Basic School Infrastructure Support; Youth apprenticeship programme; and the Obuasi Campus of KNUST among others.
