The Amenfiman Rural Bank Limited at Wasa Akropong in the Wasa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region has constructed and handed over eight mechanised boreholes fitted with three horsepower pumps and a ten thousand-litre capacity poly-tank each to eight communities.
The project cost GH¢320,000 and comes with great relief to the beneficiary communities after many years lacking potable drinking water, and was facilitated as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.
The water project has been described as timely, because it will also compliment government’s efforts through the local assembly towards mitigating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The beneficiary communities include Ahenboboano, Ashireagya, Anloga Abesewa Gyaman – all in the Wasa Akropong area of the Wasa Amenfi East Municipality.
The rest are New Town (Jegem Area), Blockso, and Esikafoambantsem in the Asankragwa area of the Wasa Amenfi West Municipality.
At a short but colourful ceremony to hand over the eight projects to leaders of the communities, a member of the Board of Directors, Mr. Edmund Afful, acknowledged the bank’s commitment to offer such community support which is dear to the hearts of directors.
He said the bank is owned by the people, and therefore it is important that part of the profit is committed to developing communities within the catchment areas while empowering the people, particularly the youth.
Mr. Afful however entreated chiefs and opinion leaders of these beneficiary communities to endeavour to maintain the facilities to benefit all. He observed that the bank envisages doing more for the people, but will be encouraged by the way projects they undertake are maintained by the communities.
The Board of Directors Chairman, Dr. Tony Aubynn, entreated the community’s people to support activities of the bank in every endeavour. He assured the people of the bank’s commitment to community development.
Dr. Aubynn said the bank is very well financially-positioned to give all financial support to its clients, and so they must have confidence in the Board and Management to deliver on their mandate.
The CEO, Dr. Alex Asmah, in an interview said the water project is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ – one of the 17 SDGs established by the UN in 2015, which calls for ensuring availability and sustainable management of potable water and sanitation for all.
With the commissioning and handing over of the mechanised water facilities for the communities now, they contend that this will contribute to improving health and sanitary conditions within the area.
Dr. Asmah has reiterated that the bank prioritises the welfare of its shareholders as well as people in the communities in which it operates, hence the pursuit of these community investment projects and social responsibility actions.
According to him, the bank is able to make these social commitments through the profits it makes; and so he advised the people to continue doing business with the bank, particularly in this time that it has introduced very flexible credit rate mitigation interventions.
