Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the waste management company contracted to disinfect markets and streets of the country against COVID-19, has extended the exercise as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to cover some significant public service institutions and all public tertiary institutions.
The CSR Project, worth over GH¢1million is aimed at complementing government’s efforts to disinfect all public places that might be host to the virus and threat to measures put in place to control it.
CSR Project Coordinator, Zoomlion Disinfection Exercise, Lola Asiseh Ashitey, addressing the media at the commencement of the disinfection exercise at the premises of the Judicial Services Secretariat, stated that the project is targeted at disinfecting about 50 selected institutions nationwide.
“After partnering with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to disinfect the country which we have done for 13 regions already, we decided to zoom into other places where we usually find more people gathering and the judicial services is one of such institutions,” she said.
She urged users of the facilities to be disinfected not to compromise on adhering to the protocols put in place by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) curbing the spread of the virus. “After we have spread, if people come around and do not observe the protocols it goes back to square one. What we are saying is that wherever has been disinfected is a safe place for you to observe your protocols,” she emphasized.
In relation to the judicial service disinfection exercise, four major facilities in Accra were disinfected including the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, The Ghana School of Law and the residence of the Chief Justice.
National President, Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana, Alex Nartey, commended Zoomlion Ghana for the generous offer to ensure that the judiciary service is safe as it delivers on its mandate, and further pleaded that the disinfection exercise be extended to cover all courts nationwide.
Commenting on the measures put in place by the judicial service to curtail the spread of COVID-19, he indicated that the judicial service is one of the cardinal institutions that will not that take national interventions for granted and as such, the service nationwide has observed all the protocols that were instituted by government and the related authorities.
“Internally, among the judiciary, social distancing has been observed nationwide and at the entrance of every law court in the country, Veronica buckets have been placed there filled with water and soap for hand washing and the security at post has been directed to ensure that whoever enters the courtroom washes the hand before entering and before coming out,” he said.
The disinfection exercise at the judicial services was carried out concurrently at some other public institutions among which were the School for the Blind- Akropong, School for the Deaf- Mampong Akuapem, Dzorwulu Special School and the Senior Correctional Centre.
