As part of measures to support businesses and households during the Coronavirus pandemic, President Akufo-Addo has announced that government will absorb three months free electricity bills for the poor, and 50 percent for industries and other households.
The relief package which covers bills for April, May, and June, follows an earlier announcement last week, of government absorbing for the same period, the water bills for all Ghanaians.
This means that that it is free electricity for persons for who consume 0-50kwh a month for this period, 50 percent discount for consumers, residential and industrial.
The President, in his Thursday night address on measures taken against the spread of the virus, said: “As part of the measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the social and economic lives of the country, I indicated in my last speech, that government will absorb water bills for all Ghanaians for the next three months, that is, April, May, and June.
We have decided on further measures of mitigation for all Ghanaians for the next three months, that is, April, May, and June, government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, ie, for all life-line consumers. It is free electricity for persons for persons who consume 0-50kwh a month for this period.
In addition, for all other consumers, residential and industrial, government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bills for this period using your March, 2020 bill as your benchmark.
The President further noted that such measures are being taken to support industries, enterprises, and the service sectors “in these difficult times and to provide some relief to households for lost income.”
Ghana has so far, recorded 378 positive cases of COVID-19 with six deaths. The President urged all citizens to continue to adhere to the directives aimed at preventing the further spread of the virus.
